I can't remember where the phrase originates, but a good movie really lets you escape reality for a short time. I already mentioned the Sound of Music in an earlier blog and it is one of those movies that I can watch over & over. I hadn't been to a movie theater in a while to see a movie, but went on Friday night and saw the movie, CHEF.  It was a delightful movie that made me laugh out loud (literally).

And it got me thinking about other memorable movies over the past 50 years.  A couple stick out for different reasons.
One of the earliest memories is my parents taking us to the movies as a family to see Young Frankenstein. It was released in 1974 so I was 10, by brother Stephen (7) and my brother Greg (5).  There is an opening scene where Gene Wilder knocks on the door to the mansion ... and I can remember my brother Stephen yelling "get me outa here".
I believe he sat in my mom's lap with his face away from the movie screen the whole time.

I love reading mysteries.  I often figure it out before the ending, so if I'm left in suspense all the way through that's a bonus.  And one of the memorable movies of this genre for me was from the 80's The Bedroom Window.

I also enjoy independent and foreign films.  I don't even mind sub-titles.  When I moved to Toronto the world of indie films really opened up to me with the Cumberland and Carlton Theaters just a subway ride away.  It was an agenda item on trips when my mom would come for a visit.  Although the options have improved in Texas and one of the foreign films I fondly remember seeing at the Inwood Theater was Amelie.
It was suggested recently that I tap into my inner child again.  I'm heading off to Paris in September with my mom & sister to continue the birthday celebrations.  I think perhaps I will need to rent Amelie again for some inspiration.
